Corporate Media

where's the real content? Where's the real news?

I think the modern media has lost "focus" or "sight" of its original purpose. In particular, the news media seems to be less concerned with reporting objective facts, (such as the state of the economy or the housing market). Instead, Tiger Woods has an affair and everyone goes crazy! That's journalism? Something seems to be missing. Something seems wrong! That's why I'm writing about these issues. Back in the "old days", the idea behind news reporting was that news anchors report information regarding current events so that people at home can make an informed opinion about the reported facts. However these days, the content of the nightly news seems to revolve more around "entertainment", "non-news stories" and outright garbage as "news".

The nightly news has become "nightly entertainment" and seems to ignore being objective, unbiased and opinionated. Many news anchors seem to be competing with each other to see who can be the most "entertaining", rather than the most informative. Also - the "information" that is often reported as "news" seems to be questionable at best, and downright irrelevant at worst. News no longer has much "intellectual appeal". Entertainment value has taken the place of intellectual content.

Entertainment is fine when it comes to music, movies or storytelling. However, when it comes to what is going on in the world - I need real journalists, reporters and news anchors to present the facts to me in a rational and intelligent manner, so that I can stay informed. I do not need them to editorialize the information, I need them to deliver the information. I'll do the editorializing! I need to know as much factually accurate information as possible in order to make an informed decision.

I need to know far less about Britney Spears's personal affairs, and more about U.S. foreign policy, the economy and issues directly affecting me. These views and opinions are an attack on the media as a whole, not just certain areas of the media. I'm tempted to discuss my disdain for "commercials and advertisements" in this article, but I'd rather wait and write a separate article about those issues. Basically, I abhor commercials. There're too many of them. They're too intrusive, abrasive and antiquated. .

Do I hate everything about the media? Not necessarily. I do like the fact that we have seem to have more choice to select from. But, more choice doesn't necessarily yield in more decent content. Basically - I think most "news" today is "recycled" from one news organization to another. Some "journalists" may "package" bits and pieces of that news differently, but it's basically all the same "crap" being spewed at us on a daily basis. Most news today seems packaged, like a corporate product. "Just heat-n-eat." Where's the meat? Where's the real content? Where's the relevant information that matters to most people?

All the major news organizations have access to a large amount of resources. They could report about anything they wanted to. However, they choose to be "lazy" and simply report on "whatever comes in the news wire". I just want honest reporting, without all the attempts to "make news entertainment." I can only speak for myself. I cannot and probably do not speak for "the herd at large". It seems that "the herd" must enjoy infotainment because that's all that's on TV these days.
