will we ever learn how to get along?

what's wrong with society?
I consider myself to be a generally easy-going person. I get along with all of my friends and family quite well, and whenever relationship matters do get complicated, I try to find a decent way to communicate with people. However, I've noticed that our society seems filled with rampant hatred in many different forms.
Maybe we could sum all of our collective hatred up like this:
- "If I don't hate you because you're black, white, gay or straight - I'll hate you because you're too fat, too short, too tall or too thin. Hell, I'll just make up a reason to hate you!" - Human attitudes towards one another!
Now I'm known to be a person who wears my opinion on my sleeve and I'm not ashamed of it, but damn people, this kind of madness has got to stop! It's no wonder we have such social ills as wars, conflicts and corruption. It's been said by some very reputable scientists that the reason we'll never be able to discover other intelligent life forms in the universe, is because we'll have exterminated ourselves first. I'm sad to say I think this is probably true.
We will exterminate ourselves because we will simply have failed to learn from our past mistakes. We'll be horrified by our atrocities, but we'll continue the cycle all over again. We will remember every minute detail about events of the past; but we'll forget the most important lessons about what caused our failures. We will forget the very things that make it possible for History to repeat itself and the result will be self-extermination as a species.
