American existentialism

American Existentialism!

Existentialism is not just a European fad or tradition:

For many people, existentialism may seem like a european philosophy. Europe might be where existential ideas originated but - it would soon cross the oceans and reach America's shores. I wish to thank all the great german thinkers such as Nietzsche, Husserl and Heidegger.

There are countless examples of "existential" themes in american literature, movies and art. I won't go into detail about it here, accept to mention that I am not the only one who believes that existentialism is experiencing a "come back" in modern life. There are many "american existentialists", but they are less well-known because of the influence and tendency for people to immediately think of the more famous "european" existentialist philosophers.

What I'm about to say next may really seem strange, and that is that, "I" consider myself an american existentialist. I plan to "publish" some of my work at some point in my life. I have lots of "essays" that I've written over the years both on paper and in digital form that I hope will be worthy of publication in the future. If it happens, great. If not - that's fine too. Either way, I consider myself a true existentialist philosopher ...and that's true whether or not I have a "degree".

In a time when americans are trying to find meaning in their lives, I find it appropriate to bring existentialism back from the dead philosophers and into the lives of modern people. In a time when the american people are losing faith in just about every institution in the country, people need "visionaries" and social philosophers to sort of guide them and perhaps lead them in a direction where they can find meaning in their lives. It's my opinion that we (collectively) are experiencing the angst of post-industrial capitalism.
